Using course terms to segment your course

You can watch this recorded webinar to learn how to publish your spring semester for your students to view.

Course terms allow you to split your course into segments and allow you to:

  • Create Grading Periods

  • Manage when Assignments, Quizzes, and Units are visible to your students

  • Simplify your course view throughout the year

Watch this 10min video to help you get started.

What you need to know about Course Terms

  • Course Terms create Grading Periods in your gradebook

  • Assignments and Quizzes are included in a grading period by assigning Units to a Course Term

  • Once you create Course Terms, all Units must be assigned to a term

  • One Course Term must always be turned on

  • Completed Course Terms are always shown in the gradebook along with student submissions

How to use Terms

  1. Create your Course Terms

  2. Add current Units to your Terms

  3. Select a term when you create new Units in the Course Builder

How to Create Course Terms

Course terms are set up and managed in Course Settings.

Step 1: Select your course terms

  1. Go to Course Settings

  2. Click Course Terms

  3. Select the number of terms you want for your course

You can select from our pre-set terms

2 Semesters

3 Trimesters

4 Quarters

6 Terms

Create course terms and grading periods in your course.

Step 2: Select the current term

By default, the first term will be chosen as the current term. However, updating the current term when you switch to a new one is essential. For instance, if you start teaching in Semester 2, you must select Semester 2 to help your students easily view the current term.

The Current Term will display a green "Current Term" badge.

Select the current term.

.

Step 3: Assign Existing Units to a Course Term
Units determine what activities are included in each course term. All units must be connected to a course term.

All existing units will be automatically added to the first term. You can assign a Unit to another term in the Assigned Terms section. You can bulk-move units into another term or select the drop-down menu next to each unit.

Click the "Save units" button to save your changes.

Do you want to create custom terms?

No problem. Select the pre-set terms closest to what you want to create for your course. Once your terms are created, you can rename, delete, or add new terms

How to Use Course Terms

You can manage your terms in Course Settings > Course Terms

  1. Set what terms are visible to students

  2. Edit Course Term names

  3. Manage Units and Terms

  4. Set up weighted grading periods

  5. Add or Delete Course Terms

Set what terms are visible to students

The toggle next to the term name is used to control how Terms are visible in your Course. You can simplify your course by turning off previous and future terms. Note, you must have one term visible at all times and current course terms are visible to students and cannot be turned off.

When you toggle on two or more terms, you can view multiple terms in the Course Builder and Units view. A drop-down menu on the left sidebar appears which allows you to select a term to view.

Best Practices

For a simplified course view, turn off all previous and future terms. Your students will only have access to assignments, quizzes, and units in the current term.

While building your course, turn on multiple terms. Terms that are toggled off will not be visible in the Course Builder. You cannot create units or add assignments and quizzes to a term that is turned off.

  • If you are not ready for your students to view the units inside the term, you can hide the units from students by toggling off the unit in the course builder.

  • Once you set up your units for future terms, you can toggle off the Term so it is not visible to students. This helps simplify the unit view for your students.

Pro-tip: If you are working on multiple terms but don't want your students to see future terms, you can toggle off (hide) the units in the Course Builder

Edit Course Term names

The term name is shown when filtering course terms throughout your course. You can easily edit the term name by clicking on the name or by hovering over the right of the table to display the drop-down menu options. Here, you can select to edit or delete the term.

  • Click Edit to change the term name

  • When you are finished, click the Save Course Term button

Manage Units and Terms

You can easily manage what units are connected to a term. To bulk add or change which units are assigned to a term:

In the Assigned Terms section, you can move units into different terms.

  1. Move individual units into a term by selecting the term on the drop-down menu.

  2. Bulk move multiple units into a term.

  3. Click the Save button to save your changes.

Create New Units

You can create new units in the Course Builder. Note: If only one term is turned on, the new unit will automatically be assigned to the term that is turned on.

If multiple course terms are turned on, you can select a term when creating or editing new units.
